Great question — many people don't realize there are several different versions of mahjong played around the world, each with its own rules, scoring, and even tile sets. My lessons focus on American Mah Jongg, played under National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, which is the most common version played in the U.S. That said, I love the game in all its forms — I'm happy to offer an introductory taste of Hong Kong, Taiwanese, or Filipino mahjong and highlight some of the fun differences, though American Mah Jongg remains my specialty and the focus of my regular lessons.

Your first 3 lessons are MAHJ 101, 102, and 103 — and each one builds on the last. MAHJ 101 covers the basics: understanding the tiles, learning how to read the card, and getting comfortable with how the game works, so you can start practicing on your own online in between lessons. MAHJ 102 and 103 take it further, covering game set-up, dealing the tiles, understanding the Charleston, and playing the full game from start to finish. By the end of your third lesson, you'll have everything you need to sit down and play a complete game with confidence.

Both are hands-on and personalized — the difference is really just group size and pricing. Smaller groups get more one-on-one attention; larger groups are a fun way to learn alongside friends.

For lessons, no — everything you need is provided. Just bring yourself (and maybe a friend or two). For Open Play, you'll need to bring your own set, or rent one for $15.

Open Play is casual, drop-in play with no instruction — perfect for players who already know the game. Guided Play adds instruction and guidance at the table for an extra $15.

The deposit holds your spot at the table. Cancel at least 24 hours in advance and it's fully refunded or banked toward a future Open Play date. Cancellations within 24 hours and no-shows forfeit the deposit.

Yes — Open Play doesn't include instruction, so it's best for players who've already taken lessons or know the basics. If you're new, I'd recommend starting with a lesson or adding Guided Play.

Locations vary, and some sessions are hosted at local restaurants or shops. When we play at a venue, part of being a good guest is supporting the space that's hosting us — a drink or a bite goes a long way.
